How to Start Your Swim Training Plan
3 Things to Remember to Kickstart Your Summer Regimen
Summer is prime swimming season and with school out of session, there’s no better time to start a swim training plan. But how can you start strong and ensure you’ll stick with it? By establishing your goals and prepping your swim bag with the essentials, you’ll be sure to kickoff summer with a splash.

- Set Goals
- Prep Before You Go
- Stay Motivated
Set Goals
The most important step when developing your swim training plan is to visualize what your goals look like. Take the time to sit down and write answers to the following questions: What are my current strengths? What can I improve? How can I accomplish my goals?
Perhaps you want to improve your freestyle timing or perfect your butterfly stroke, or maybe you just want to spend more time swimming. Whatever the case may be, make your goals specific and realistic. If you’ve only got this summer, consider your schedule and how much time you’ll have to practice your swimming.
Prep Before You Go
After you’ve set your goals, consider what you’ll need in order to accomplish them. Particularly, you’ll need common essentials such as the pull-buoy and kickboard, which you’ll typically find at swim schools and public pool facilities. If you want more information on pool equipment, check out our blog post here.
Besides equipment, consider downloading phone applications to track your progress. We recommend apps like MySwimPro, where you can create custom workouts, keep track of milestones, sync your progress to multiple devices. iSwimTimes is also great for time tracking and providing tips on how to improve speed. Of course, you can make it simpler by integrating your plan to your calendar and using the stopwatch feature on your phone.
Stay Motivated
Creating your swim training plan and making sure you’re prepped efficiently is the easy part, but making sure you stay motivated is the hard part. Most of the time, holding yourself accountable makes it easier to stick to a routine. Get family and friends involved on your plan and they’ll be there to cheer you on to help you accomplish your goals. And why train alone? Grab another fellow swimmer to train with you and make a plan to reach your goals together!
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t follow your plan to a T, the most important thing to do is to listen to your body and adjust your plan accordingly. Maybe one day your muscles are extra sore and that strenuous workout you had planned turns into a simple stretching session. Just remember the most important part is staying consistent. And when you’re feeling discouraged, think back to what got you started in the beginning. You are the only thing standing between you and your swim training goals.
